Despite having a population of only 50± permanent residents, Read Island has a government dock, post office, general store, coffee shops, school, accommodation, community hall, and various farms that provide local produce. Located at the south end of the island is Read Island Provincial Park, which contains approximately 637 hectares (1,574 acres). Read Island is popular for seasonal vacation properties with excellent salmon fishing, boating, kayaking and the off-grid lifestyle.
Quadra Island is part of the Discovery Islands archipelago, which is located along the Inside Passage between Campbell River, on the north end of Vancouver Island, and the mainland of British Columbia. Quadra Island is 34 km long with an average width of 9 km and most of its 4,000 full-time residents live on the southern half of the island. The two main population centers are Quathiaski Cove and Heriot Bay, and both locations have shops, post offices and restaurants. Quathiaski Cove also has a gas station and credit union. A tourist information booth, open from mid June until Labour Day weekend, is located next to the Quadra Credit Union. At the Saturday Farmers Market held in Quathiaski Cove, vendors’ tables are loaded with fresh farm produce, delicious baking and unique crafts. Visitors enjoy browsing in island gift shops; finding everything they need in the stores.
